What a wet few days it’s been; this together with low air pressure produced a high tide tonight in Cowes. Fortunately the strong, blustery wind seemed to be coming from the South, blowing waves away from the areas of Cowes and East Cowes that are vulnerable to flooding. Even so, each end of the floating [...]

Today being a day of action highlighting the plight of the ex-employees abandoned by Vestas, Wighteye was interested to see the reports of action being taken in Southampton around this issue, see savevestas . A recent visit to the Marine Gate of the Newport, Isle of Wight plant found a group of protesters readying themselves [...]

After a hard day’s work, I was ready to pass up on that Gene Pitney moment*, but no chance! The 5 mile journey from Newport to East Cowes usually takes 10 minutes by car, tonight it was 75. Why’s that you may ask? Is East Cowes so popular for it’s amenities? Is it the centre [...]

Roll on a full investigation by the Office of Fair Trading into bus services here on the Isle of Wight. Southern Vectis have recently reduced the service from East Cowes to Ryde to just one an hour for much of the day; when will there be some joined up thinking about public transport strategy, particularly [...]

Bell’s Landing is on the seafront at East Cowes, it’s next to the public toilets by Venture Quays. Both will disappear if current planning applications lodged with the Council by SEEDA receive approval. There is an application to remove the landing, to be replaced by a ‘public landing’ as part of a proposed marina development. [...]

…. so reads the sign in the office windows of the OC Group in East Cowes ‘ Venture Quays. It looks like there’s a bit of a backlash against Vestas and their actions on the Isle of Wight may well come back to haunt them!

Five are now seven with the addition of two more women to the roof top occupation of Venture Quays, East Cowes, Isle of Wight. Wighteye was able to chat freely with the protesters and make a small delivery of food without hindrance, unlike the situation that had prevailed in the Newport sit-in. Locals seem to [...]
East Cowes night life

Friday night was fireworks night, as usual the East Cowes Business Association funded entertainment on the sea front, Dot Com played some lovely covers of Pink Floyd, causing Wighteye to reflect back on seeing the Floyd back in ‘74. The fireworks were enjoyable, though one could question whether £30,000 could be better spent on something [...]

The five demonstrators on the roof of Venture Quays, East Cowes, Isle of Wight, have had an interesting few days. They’ve been busy hanging banners and raising flags, but a few nights ago had to brave thunder and lightning combined with torrential rain. Still, at least they’ve had entertainment from Cowes Week, plenty of boats [...]

‘Up on the Roof” is a great song, wonder if they’re humming it up on the top of Venture Quays in East Cowes? This is where 5 climate change campaigners are camping out in protest at the closure of the Vestas plant in Newport. Vestas workers in East Cowes had been sent home on full [...]
