Wighteye has been shocked by the news this afternoon of the assassination of Benazhir Bhutto in Pakistan. Although I can find no direct link between her life and our island, we are of course linked by the desire for freedom to choose those that govern us. Watching the response of the US government (with whom I [...]

Santa relocates to Cowes

I couldn’t believe my eyes as I wandered into Cowes this morning; I was only after a pack of ready roll shortcrust pastry, when who should I see walking towards me but an elderly gentleman with a bushy white beard and moustache. I nearly remarked on the likeness, but thought Santa must be far up [...]
Free local entertainment

Well done to the organisers of tonight’s free entertainment in East Cowes, it was good to see a good crowd come out on a cold winter’s evening. We were treated to performances by dancers, the ubiquitious Randini and what for me was the star attraction, Matt Splatt with his Ryde Extreme Performers providing a pyrotechnic [...]
Rights of Way?

Strolling along from the Folly Inn to the new Bistro at Island Harbour, I was dismayed to find that although I was on a public footpath, the new lock system gates were open at Island Harbour and I was unable to cross until three boats had passed through; this took perhaps ten minutes. On my [...]
Siberian refugees arrive

Making the most of a break in the weather, I spotted these Brent Geese on the Medina at the Folly Lake, winter visitors from Siberia; to think we thought it was getting cold here!
Iggy, Iggy, Iggy

Well at last we have something to cheer about as the signing of Iggy & the Stooges brings some genuine grit to the 2008 Isle of Wight Festival; Iggy Pop was entertaining and provocative a couple of years back at the festival, it should be good to see him with his rightful backing band. Should [...]
Underwhelmed by festival news

So it’s the Kaiser Chiefs headlining the Isle of Wight Festival on Friday Night. Wow!????
Mrs Wighteye’s response was “I don’t think I’m gonna bother to go at all” and that’s ligging for free on the opposite bank! Things do seem to be going downhill, or are we just getting to be boring old farts?
After the storm

East Cowes is relatively sheltered, so I know that when I see two trees down when on an early morning walk, there must be much worse storm damage elsewhere. Spotted this tree blocking Albany Road. Guess it’s lucky it fell this way and not through a house!
Queen Victoria passes East Cowes

A hardy band of early risers gathered at Castle Point, East Cowes this morning to see Cunard’s new liner, Queen Victoria, make its way into Southampton, where the official naming ceremony will take place today. She certainly looks grand, although having her name up in lights seemed to be a little brash and lacking in [...]
Creativity helps

Had a barney with Mrs Wighteye this evening and disappeared out for a walk, feeling quite down, but the mood lightened as I removed the camera from my pocket and started playing with the manual exposure settings; both East Cowes and myself need creativity. The photo is really a follow-up to an original article about [...]
